Dream Dictionary Art Gallery
Introducing Erich Rock – Artist in Residence @ dreamsdictionary.org
Erich discovered he could create things that people like when he was 7 years old. For his grade one class, he drew and coloured a picture of an old car that his teacher took home with her to frame. Since then he’s carved, sculpted, painted, jeweled and invented innumerable pieces. The works that are showcased on this site have been done over a 15 year span.
Erich lived in Victoria, B.C. Canada from 1990 – 1994, at which time he immersed himself in the artwork of the west coast native peoples. Wandering through galleries, museums, and small shops, Erich practiced and developed his own technique; marrying sculpture and carving for new expressions of spirit in nature.
He carves and in some cases adds paint to these archetypal works. Typically a piece takes him 2 – 3 months to complete. All his creations are done by hand using knife and chisel, paint brush and acrylic paint. The wood that Erich uses comes from a naturally felled tree which has been drying in someone’s barn, basement or field for possibly years. He calls it “spirit wood”.
Art Pieces Not For Sale
At this time none of Erich’s original art pieces are for sale. In Victoria, Erich had explored mold-making and sold several copies of his smaller sculptures at the touristy shops near the Victoria Harbour. At present he’s kindly agreed to share them with me on dreamsdictionary.org. If you have any thoughts, questions or feedback for Erich, please feel welcome to email him. Erich is the life partner of the author of this online dream dictionary, Kathleen Meadows.
If you wish to use any of his images, Erich is not unreasonable! He asks only that you put his name with the photo with a link back to this home site. Also please drop him an email to let him know with a link so he can have a peek at where you’ve put it on your site.
