Dream Study Group – Class 8
SUMMARY CLASS
Rewards of Dream Study: Final Class Eight
Dreams save people from blindness. The dream tells us a story. A Story that Matters. A dream is a letter from home.
40 – 49 dreams/week approx.
Astonishing synchronicity – lead us forward in certain ways – miraculous – the whole dream can seem like an instruction from the divine.
The dream channel shows all the story regardless of their source.
Insight into our real life – illness – relationships – who is a good partner, friend.
What is there something like that in my life? being chased? finding something new? How does the larger motif fit for the life I’m living right now?
Absolute knowledge of your own world. Direct. Calling a spade a spade.
They strengthen us with resolve to move forward. Oak door – a mother shows her daughter an oak door. Daughter was not listening to mother’s advice.
First Step is Dream Recall and Recording
The more you pay attention and repeat the motion of remembering the better it gets – put recording devices by bedside – I am committed to remembering my dreams” – dream maker I want to remember my dreams – write down anything – a wisp of smoke. The tiniest dream memory is important. The essence is the most important. What’s going on between the people.
Look at all the nouns in the dream first. Next make a list of the nouns. Make a personal association to the first noun and write them down. Then reread your dream aloud and instead of saying the noun say the association itself. Where is this or where ought this be happening in my life right now.
There are Many Interpretations of a Dream
Misconception: There is only ONE true interpretation to a dream. Dream interpretation is closest to translation – very open to interpretation and often has multiple levels of meaning.
Dreams should be interpreted creatively and poetically. Dream maker can link symbols together in combinations very unique – not prone as the ego to constraint.
Looking for the AHA! experience. Sure sign you’ve hit the mark.
Spiritual & Unusual Dreams
- Precognitive – dream maker has no time/space reality (objective)warning dreams – no failing or shame in passing a warning along to the person – no failing or shame in notifying someone about your dream of their being in danger – a tremendous act of love Subjective versus objective – dreams about me or dreams about others we don’t know until we make our associations to it – never quite sure until we make our associations to it – begin at, “Where is this theme active in MY life?”
- Apparition/visitation dreams – the person is asleep or awake – often this is unclear – so real about someone who has passed – the holy scriptures throughout the world describe apparition dreams (ie. angels, divine presence).
- Lucid dreams – the person has the sensation that they are awake within the dream itself and can manipulate it (not for ego!) but from a soul perspective, “Please give me direction”.
- Disembodied voice dream – no body or image – ears inside our ears that can hear without voice – recorded in all the holy works too.
- Sexual/sensual dream – the body is as involved as the psyche – still needs to be examined symbolically – where is this happening in my life? This may trigger guilt in the dreamer but there is no reason – we aren’t in control of our dreams!
- The cry of silence dream – no words or images – total silence but it IS a dream with a palpable, feelable (eerie) sense of silence – a cry for help in the psyche – it’s as if it cannot speak – imprisonment/something trapped in the psyche – often associated with a sense of panic or A silence of complete well being – often very ill or recovering from a sickness – a restorative and healing dream – a sense of sleeping so deeply.
- Hearing foreign or unusual word – spoken clearly and means something but the dreamer doesn’t know what it means – ask yourself, “What is so unusual in my life that I’m not understanding it at all?” (sometimes it isn’t understood for years!) but at some point the dreamer through synchronicity actually discovers the word does have meaning.
- A waking dream – hypnogogic state – not awake or asleep – these images are also interpretable Active Imagination – taking an image & relax in your chair and allow the image to move like a movie – people must be sturdy in their ego – not a party game.
Common (Archetypal) Dream Themes
Characters: Mother, Divine Child, Wise Old woman, the Fool or trickster, the hero or heroine.
Falling dreams – personal associations are important – a deflation (too egotistical) – the dreamer is grandstanding, not enough reality – OR something is falling into place.
Flying dreams – being whole OR it could be the opposite – a person is on their way to a great overestimation of their abilities.
Nakedness in public – embarrassed & mortified – being naive (in need of wisdom), not having a persona (revealing too much of yourself to others in your life) OR it can mean, “I show up fresh”.
The Test – most common to students, anxiety, more is needed now, we need to prepare ourselves, we need to anticipate what is happening, we need more logic in our considerations (being too emotional).
Must do something immediately – go to the bathroom, get out a door, make a decision – a dream to those who don’t pay attention to their need for self care – needing to discharge toxic material.
Calling for help – dialling 911 – the archetypal core level the person is trying to right a HUGE imbalance and cannot make the ego pay attention – “Where have I closed off messages from my deeper self”.
Dreams are “punny” and it’s helpful to say the dream aloud to catch them.
Being in prison or trapped – something of great value in the psyche (often feels central) has been constrained to such a point that a dream like this is a letter from home – look at the condition you are in! you MUST do something about it.
Being chased – having a menacing force nearby (even a tornado) the motif is that a great shift is taking place that needs something from you NOW – needs additional care, healing, resources in order for the pyche to remain safe & whole.
Losing teeth & hair – teeth used to take in food, love play, articulate speech – “Where am I losing my ability to get nourishment out of things or give pleasure to others/myself or make myself heard and understood?” – HAIR – symbolizes the quality of a person’s ideas (Samson – very creative – lead people – cutting his hair was cutting his strength & power) “How am I losing my ability to generate ideas or how am I thinning out my ideas and creatively, or losing my strength and ability?”.
Missing appointments, trains, planes, wagon, taxi – made a promise to be somewhere or go somewhere and somehow everything gets confused – an anxiety dream – the conveyance represents the attitude the dreamer has to go forward in life ie. missing a broken down taxi – their attitude can’t take them from one place to the next – out of date, behind the times.
Animals – consider the archetypal symbology of the animal (particularly where the dreamer has no connection to the animal personally) – ie. bear – sharp claws & teeth – the horse is noble – how does nobility relate to my life – fish – can go down into the water & darkness and survive – water (considered the mother of all things) – the instinctual nature of the psyche for loving, living, community life, hunting, resting, playing – the health of the animal is important (psyche health) – eagle – leadership, hunter, loner etc.
Pregnancy dream – desire for new life to be born – for psyche potential to be fully formed and come to life.
Dreams will Return
If you do not record every dream you have, the information is not lost! The dream maker will keep repeating the same motifs until you DO receive the message clearly.
Troubling dreams – sometimes reoccurring – by speaking the dream aloud is often enough to cause the dream to stop – if the dream maker believes the dreamer has received the message in full it stops OR draw the image. Drawing it, writing it out in full AND telling it to another person, the dream will stop. When you ignore dream messages they do repeat. Dreams come to make a person more whole, and larger.
4 Dream Components According to Jung
- Exposition – the opening (like a novel) setting, characters
- Mounting action – characters now moving
- The crisis – a tension point
- The Resolution – the part where the outcome is seen
Follow Your Dreams and Leave a Better World Behind
Dreams make us as large as we really are – they give us the world on the terms of our wholeness. When we follow our dreams we can leave a better world behind because we give others permission to follow an interior prophet, teacher and story teller who can work to make others whole as well. May you have dreams that save you from yourself.
