Dreams are Punny
For example, a woman dreamt her husband was patting tame lions and tigers. In waking life her husband was scheduled for a CAT scan which had them worried. A dream group member asked her about cats and the dreamer was struck by the pun. The connection between the tame cats in the dream and the CAT scan was a message relayed in pun that they didn’t need to worry. As it turned out the CAT scan was clear.
If you dream of a bear ask yourself where are you bare or what do you have to bear? A dreamer had a series of dreams about warehouses and at the time was in a turmoil about moving. Warehouse became where – house?
Be a Good Listener and Don’t Judge
It is helpful when working with a dreamer to be a good listener and NEVER judge a dreamer’s answer. It is their dream and their process and the dreamer is the best interpreter of their dream.
Put Interpretation into Action
After you have explored your dream, do something physical in your waking life that relates to the dream. This follow-up further helps to connect your dream with your waking life. It is wonderful to gain insight and new awarenesses but it is important to act on these insights to gain full benefit. Ask yourself what you can do in your waking life to illustrate or symbolize what you have learned. If your dream has let you know you need to spend more time with others, then phone someone and arrange to get together. If you realize you need more exercise or a change in your eating habits or diet then start to do this. Each action that you take inspired by your dream insight, communicates to your unconscious mind that you are paying attention to your dream messages. A drawing, sketching, painting, wall hanging, or any creative expression of your dream is a profound method to develop not only your creativity but also further insight.
Frequently Asked Questions About Your Dreaming Mind
How can I improve my dream recall?
- intend to remember your dreams.
- ask for dreams and promise yourself that you will record them.
- keep your recording materials close by your bedside
- see yourself recording your dreams, pen in hand or tape recorder turned on and – see your hand writing a dream or hear your voice telling the dream.
- read books on dream exploration.
- pay attention to your mood upon awakening and make note of this.
- commit yourself to writing something every morning when you first awaken. If you don’t remember a dream or feeling then write whatever comes into your mind.
- have a large glass of water before you go to bed. Nature will call around 3 or 4 in the morning and there is a good chance you will awaken with a dream.
What Prevents Dream Recall
It is important to write down whatever you remember of your dream as soon as possible upon awakening. Pick a strong image or feeling and make a point of remembering this before you even move. Moving uses parts of your brain that interfere with dream recall. Dream recall is affected by many factors. For example, hormonal changes in the body, stress levels, medications or amount of sleep can increase or block dream recall. The important issue is not how many dreams you recall but what you do with the ones you remember. It is especially true in dream exploration that quality is more rewarding than quantity. Dream interpretation in depth with one dream is more beneficial than being able to recall 4-5 dreams a night and then not giving them a second thought.
